Definition

Interstitial ad.

Also called: IS, Full-screen ad

A full-screen ad shown at a natural break in the experience, such as between levels, that the player did not choose to see.

Interstitials are the main volume format for ad-funded casual games. Because they interrupt, they carry the highest irritation cost of the common formats, and their frequency is usually the first lever teams pull to raise ad revenue.

Good practice is to protect early sessions, cap frequency, avoid showing them at moments of loss or frustration, and read the effect on retention and payer behaviour — not just ad ARPDAU — before scaling a change.
