Bookings and Revenue Run on Different Clocks

Roblox reported $4.89B of 2025 revenue and $6.79B of bookings. The gap is not an error. It is a clock.

Roblox’s 2025 annual report contains a useful example of two correct numbers telling you different things about the same business.

Roblox reported $4.89 billion of revenue for 2025. It recorded $6.79 billion of bookings. Both numbers are in the same 10-K. The gap is not an error. It is a clock.

Bookings capture the value of transactions with users when they occur. Most virtual-item revenue is recognised over time, using the estimated average lifetime of a paying user. Roblox estimated that lifetime at 27 months as of December 31, 2025. Consumed items are recognised as they are consumed. A purchase today can become revenue spread across more than two years.

What each number can tell you

Bookings tell you what is happening now: how much commercial activity occurred during the period. Revenue tells you what accounting recognises during the period: a mix of current activity and the long tail of purchases made earlier.

In a growing business the two can diverge substantially — bookings can run ahead because new cohorts add deferred revenue that has not been recognised yet.

The question is not which number is correct. It is which clock matches the decision.

If you use revenue to read current player spending, you are steering by a lagged signal. A bookings surge can look muted for months. A bookings decline can be masked by the old tail still recognising. Bookings are closer to current transaction activity — what players did with their money this period — but they are not a substitute for revenue, cash flow, or profitability.

The reconciliation is the diagnostic

Roblox’s deferred revenue increased by roughly $1.9 billion in 2025. That movement explains most — not all — of the distance between bookings and recognised revenue: current commercial activity waiting to become reported revenue. It is not a quality verdict by itself.

The market replies in numbers. The operator’s job is to know which number is answering which question.
