Bookings vs Revenue in Games, Explained
Bookings tell you what players spent this period. Revenue tells you what accounting recognises. Confusing the two is how teams misread momentum in both directions.
What is the difference between bookings and revenue?
Bookings are the value of transactions with players when they occur. Revenue is the part of that value accounting recognises in the period. For consumable items — a booster used immediately — the two are close. For durable items — a character, a permanent upgrade — revenue is typically recognised over the estimated period the player benefits, often the average lifetime of a paying user.
Public companies make the gap visible. Roblox reported $4.89 billion of revenue for 2025 and $6.79 billion of bookings in its FY2025 10-K, and estimated its average paying-user lifetime at 27 months as of 31 December 2025. A purchase made today can become revenue spread across more than two years.
What connects the two numbers?
Deferred revenue. When bookings exceed recognised revenue, the difference accumulates as a liability on the balance sheet; when old deferred revenue is recognised, it flows into revenue without a new transaction. Roblox’s deferred revenue rose by roughly $1.9 billion in 2025, which explains most — not all — of the distance between its bookings and revenue that year.
Why does it matter for operators?
Because the two numbers run on different clocks, they can point in different directions:
- In a growing business, bookings run ahead of revenue. Reading revenue as “what players are spending” understates momentum.
- In a declining business, revenue can stay flat for months as older durable purchases keep recognising, masking a fall in current spending.
- After a pricing or offer change, the effect on spending shows up in bookings immediately and in revenue gradually.
The question is not which number is correct. It is which clock matches the decision.
Which number should a studio track?
- Live-ops, offers, pricing tests: bookings (or gross transaction value), because you need to see current behaviour.
- Financial reporting and investor communication: revenue, with bookings and deferred revenue alongside.
- Cash planning: neither — use cash receipts, net of platform fees and payout timing.
Inside a game, the same discipline applies to composite metrics. A rise in ARPDAU might come from ad yield, payer conversion, pricing, or country mix; each implies a different decision. Take-Two’s Q1 FY2027 filing is a useful public example: recurrent consumer spending was 84% of net revenue while net bookings fell 2.6% year on year — composition and health are different questions.
How can I see the effect on my own numbers?
The Bookings to Revenue Deferral Calculator models monthly bookings, the durable share and the paying-user lifetime, and shows recognised revenue and the deferred balance month by month. It is a straight-line simplification; your finance team’s recognition policy will be more detailed, but the shape is the point.
