Monetisation utility · Hybrid revenue

Hybrid monetization mix model.

Hybrid monetization is better timing and a clearer exchange, not more formats. Model who earns what, then test what a routing change is worth.

Set each segment’s share of DAU and revenue per DAU by source. The scenario inputs are hypotheses to test, not predictions.

Daily revenue contribution by segment and source (today)
How it's calculated

The method, in plain terms.

  1. Segment ARPDAU = Ad ARPDAU + IAP ARPDAU + Subscription ARPDAU
  2. Blended ARPDAU = Σ (segment share × segment ARPDAU)
  3. Payer ad change: payer IAP × (1 − cannibalization % × ad-load change)
Worked example

If 3% of DAU are payers at $0.90 IAP ARPDAU and 97% non-payers earn $0.03 in ads, blended ARPDAU ≈ 0.03 × 0.90 + 0.97 × 0.03 ≈ $0.056. Removing ads for payers costs little ad revenue but can protect most of that $0.027 IAP contribution.

FAQ

Common questions.

What is hybrid monetization?

Combining in-app purchases, ads and sometimes subscriptions in one product, with each value exchange routed to the player moment where it fits. It is not the same as installing every ad format and a store — without routing logic that just creates more interruptions.

Should payers see ads?

Often not interstitials. Payers generate little ad revenue relative to their purchase value, and forced ads can erode the value of what they paid for. Many games remove interstitials for payers while keeping optional rewarded video. Test it: this model shows how little ad revenue is at stake versus the IAP you are protecting.

How do I segment players for hybrid monetization?

Start with behaviour you can observe — has paid, engaged but not paid, light play — and a hypothesis about the moment, rather than a fixed taxonomy. Then test the value exchange for each moment against a baseline, measuring both incremental revenue and player cost.

Where do the scenario numbers come from?

They are your hypotheses. The model does the arithmetic of a change; only a controlled test tells you the real effect on purchases, retention and ad yield.
