Definition

Battle pass.

Also called: Season pass

A time-limited progression track with free and premium reward tiers; players unlock rewards by playing during a season.

A battle pass (or season pass) sells access to a premium reward track for a season. It monetizes engagement rather than a single item, and it gives players a reason to return regularly.

Designs vary in how much effort completion takes, whether tiers can be bought, and how value is split between free and premium tracks. A pass priced well but requiring too much grinding can feel like upkeep rather than reward, which hurts both retention and renewal next season.
