Definition

DAU.

Also called: Daily active users

Daily active users: unique users who opened or engaged with the product on a given day.

DAU is the base for ARPDAU and most daily reporting. Define “active” precisely — a session start, a minimum session length, or a meaningful action — and keep the definition stable, or trends will reflect definition changes rather than behaviour.

DAU is the sum of retained users from every past cohort, so it can be forecast from install volume and the retention curve.
