Stop Managing Monetisation Like an Ad Tech Directory

Ad tech landscape diagrams show 20+ categories. A mobile studio’s revenue flows through two or three pipes. When revenue softens, the fix is usually in the game, not the stack.

Look at an ad tech landscape diagram and you’ll see 20+ categories: SSPs, DSPs, mediation wrappers, identity graphs, consent layers, verification suites.

Look at a mobile studio’s actual revenue, and it flows almost entirely through two or three pipes.

The industry sells you an open, modular programmatic ecosystem. Mobile monetization has consolidated into vertically integrated algorithmic engines — anchored by AppLovin and Google, with Unity LevelPlay, Mintegral, or Meta filling specific format and regional gaps.

The shift happened when mediation stopped being an auction house and became a data engine for UA. The winners didn’t win with cleaner dashboards or more demand adapters. They won by closing the loop — connecting ad yield directly to real-time UA bidding. An open exchange with a dozen disconnected middlemen can’t compete with that on clearing price.

When another network does make sense

To be clear: a new network can add value. It usually does when you’re thin on a geo, format, or fill gap your primary pipes don’t cover, or when you’re still early and testing which demand even responds. That’s a valid reason to add a pipe.

Treating that as the default move — another adapter, another wrapper, another floor test — is the miss.

Meanwhile, that extra SDK overhead adds cold-start latency, memory bloat, and crashes. Enough added latency at boot, and users abandon before they ever see an ad — that churn costs more than the eCPM lift was ever going to recover.

Where the leverage lives

When revenue softens, leadership asks: “Should we switch mediation? Add another SSP?” If the primary pipes aren’t clearing, it’s usually product — pacing, reward, D7 — not another SSP.

Stack optimisation gets you basis points. Fixing the core loop gets you multiples.

Stop managing your monetisation like an ad tech directory. Strip out the dead weight. Put your engineering time where the leverage lives — inside the game.
