AI in Mobile Game User Acquisition: Where It Helps and Where It Misleads
AI has made ad creative cheap to produce. That moves the bottleneck to briefing, testing discipline and reading cohorts — which is where UA teams should put their attention.
Where is AI changing mobile game UA today?
Mostly in creative. Generative tools make it cheap to produce hooks, variants, localisations, playable mock-ups and store assets, and industry commentators expect a growing share of game ad creatives to carry AI-generated elements through 2026. Meanwhile the ad platforms themselves — Google, Meta, AppLovin and others — run increasingly automated, model-driven campaigns that choose audiences and placements for you.
What changes when creative becomes cheap?
The bottleneck moves. Producing ten more videos is no longer the hard part; knowing which ten to make is. If the brief is “make more like the last one”, AI simply scales the last video’s mistakes — including bringing in players who install cheaply but never buy. The useful brief says what we want (installs, retained players, buyers), what the last video taught us, and the one change we are testing. The Creative Brief Builder turns that into a template.
How should UA teams test AI-generated creative?
- Test hypotheses, not volume. Change one element — the opening, the mechanic shown, the character focus — so you learn what caused the result.
- Judge on cohort quality. A creative that wins on CPI can lower D1 if it promises something the first session does not deliver — see D1 Retention Is a Promise-Keeping Metric.
- Watch concentration. Algorithms pour spend into winners fast; one AI-made creative can dominate a cohort within days.
- Keep the store page consistent. Cheap creative variants multiply the risk of a mismatch between ad and storefront — see the Store Listing 4-Second Test.
What about AI bidding and targeting?
Automated campaigns optimise toward the conversion and value you define, with less manual control over who sees ads. That makes the choice of optimisation event — and the quality of the signal you send back — the main lever you still own. If you optimise for installs and CPI falls, the system did what you asked.
Where does AI mislead?
When it produces confident answers from immature data. Early ROAS, early retention and delayed iOS postbacks look precise and are not. AI summarising a dashboard does not make the data more mature. The discipline that matters is the same as before: size decisions to the evidence.
