When to Add Another Ad Network — and When It Hurts
A new network can fill a real gap. More often it adds SDK weight, latency and crashes for a lift that disappears in the blended numbers. Here is how to tell the difference before you integrate.
When does adding an ad network make sense?
When you can name the gap it fills and measure it:
- A geo gap. Your primary pipes bid weakly in a market that matters to you.
- A format gap. You are launching a format (say, rewarded interstitials or app-open ads) where your current demand is thin.
- Thin bid density. Important placements show few active bidders, so auctions clear below value — see bid density.
- Early-stage discovery. You are still learning which demand responds to your audience.
That is a bounded reason to add a pipe. Treating it as the default response to softening revenue is the miss.
What does another network cost?
More than the integration time:
- SDK weight and cold-start latency. Enough added latency at boot and users abandon before they ever see an ad — that churn costs more than the eCPM lift was going to recover.
- Crashes and ANRs. Each SDK adds failure modes that show up in store vitals and ratings.
- Maintenance. Version updates, privacy manifests and adapter compatibility for every release.
- Analytical noise. More sources make it harder to see which change moved revenue.
How should you test a new network?
- Write down the expected gap — geo, format, placement — and the metric that should move.
- Measure the baseline: revenue per eligible opportunity, bid rate, win rate, show rate, latency, crash rate.
- Roll out to a slice (one geo, one platform) with a comparison group.
- Keep it only if it adds value net of latency and stability, not if it simply takes wins from existing bidders at similar prices.
What if revenue is softening anyway?
Look inside the game first. Mobile studio ad revenue flows almost entirely through two or three pipes; if those are not clearing, the cause is usually product — pacing, reward design, D7 retention — not the absence of another SSP. Stack optimisation gets you basis points. Fixing the core loop gets you multiples.
